You might think, maybe Naledi just didn't have the Y variant we recognize, or it somehow didn't preserve as well, or the sequencing somehow didn't pick it up, but Hawks (who in my experience is generally pretty cautious) argues these kinds of scenarios are unlikely. And as it is it turns out, there were hints in other data long before they did the protein work
