Part I - #JosefNassy was an Afro-Jewish #artist + #Holocausttsurvivor born in 1904 in Surinam. His father was of Jewish descent + his mother Surinamese, of African descent. In 1928 Nassy received work in Europe for Warner Brothers but had to prove he was a US citizen. He pretended to be born in San Francisco prior to the 1899 earthquake, when records had been destroyed, + the ruse worked.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day

Young Woman with the Yellow Patch

Honoring the memory of artist Esther Lurie, born in Latvia, she studied theater set design and fine arts before immigrating to Palestine in 1934. She returned to Europe to continue her studies and was arrested in 1941 while visiting her sister and was deported to the Kovno ghetto. There she documented ghetto life, hiding more than 200 sketches in clay pots buried under her sister’s home. After liquidation of the ghetto Lurie continued to draw through confinement in two concentration camps. Esther survived the camps and returned to Israel however none of the drawings hidden in the clay pots were ever recovered. Lurie was able to recreate some of her work from photos of her sketches that had been taken and hidden by the Kovno Judenrat.
