Quirky, unpredictable film about a disparate group of gunmen hired to protect a triad leader. It's not so much the plot as the characters and the staging that's so engaging, with as much attention given to the five kicking a scrap of paper around while waiting for their boss, to long, wordless shoot-outs in deserted Hong Kong streets.

The Killer had a good plot to hang its slow-motion pyrotechnics on. Hard Boiled is almost all pyrotechnics. The plot is so silly - an arsenal hidden in a hospital? - that you might as well forget it - and logic - and instead enjoy one stunning action sequence after another. Think of it as a musical, just one with guns instead of dance steps.

A favourite film a day for 365 days: The Killer (1989).

Exploding Madonnas, doves fluttering in slow motion, about a million bullets fired. A hitman takes on one last assignment (yes, I know) to earn the money to pay for an operation to save the sight of a singer he accidentally blinded. In amongst the spectacular gun battles that dot the film like sequins is a genuinely touching story about friendship and honour.

A favourite film a day for 365 days: Mr Nice Guy.

The actual 'plot' gets a little too harsh at times, but not enough to overflow the stunts and acrobatics. The chase in the building site is fabulously inventive.
