It was originally planned to erect this monument on Glasgow Green, but due to public pressure, it was erected in Kelvingrove Park, with the soldier staring off towards Glasgow University. Over the years, it has been damaged in a variety of ways, including the loss of most of the rifle that was once held in his left hand and (I've been told) the bayounet from his right hand.

Glasgow's oldest public war memorial. Unveiled in 1906, it's a memorial to the members of the Highland Light Infantry, traditionally a Glasgow regiment, who died in the South African War (also known as the Boer War) between 1899 and 1902. Sculpted by William Birnie Rhind, it's incredibly detailed and beautifully captures the folds and creases in the soldier's uniform.

I've passed this building on Yorkhill Street in Glasgow for years, but only realised today what it was built for. It has the inscription 6th Btn HLI, which stands for the 6th Battalion of the Highland Light Infantry, and it was built as a military Drill Hall and Headquarters.

It was designed by William Hunter McNab in a combination of castellated Tudoresque and Arts and Crafts style and built in 1901.
