After dinner stroll along the tracks at our holiday location. I find my "real" camera much better at macro shots and monochrome, and I use my phone for broader pictures and landscapes. Here are a few taken with the camera, thanks to the bootleg app that lets me connect to my phone now canon have upgraded the app so much I can't get it to connect.

Steam locomotive K160 to run on the mainline for the first time in 58 years!
K160, owned by the Victorian Goldfields Railway in Castlemaine, Australia has been under heavy overhaul at the Newport Railway Workshops for the last 11 years with the assistance of mainline heritage railtour operator Steamrail Victoria. The restoration is almost complete, and following a succesful outing at the 2026 Newport Workshops Open Days running up and down the yard at Newport, it will soon be doing a light engine shakedown run on the mainline near Newport.

On May 9, the volunteer-run Talyllyn Railway will be holding a Talyllyn Women’s Day event, where the entire railway will be staffed by women volunteers. They’re a great little railway and I strongly encourage people to go and support events like this!

Update from a BBC article:
«The ORR said no agreement had been reached on an exemption and the application was being reviewed.
A spokesperson said: “We note that West Coast Railways recognises the need for Central Door Locking on the Mk1 carriages it operates. However, work remains to establish the feasibility, detail, and delivery timeline of the proposed approach. ORR has not issued any exemption to the relevant requirements of the Railway Safety Regulations 1999 in relation to this matter.”»

Tourism worries after delay to new Harry Potter train season

The operator of the Jacobite steam train has sought a safety exemption to use old-style carriages - but this needs to be reviewed.

After 20+ years of fighting the Office of Rail & Road tooth-and-nail over the matter, main-line steam railtour operator West Coast Railways has finally decided to install Central Door Locking on all its Mark 1 carriages, “following valuable feedback from our passengers and an evaluation of the operational costs associated with our Mark 2 carriages”. About bloody time.

These videos on signalling at various heritage railways in the UK are great, if a bit rough. Brynglas Blockpost - and the block working system in general on the Talyllyn Railway - is very strange. Brynglas has Tyers train token instruments and a lever frame interlocked with a passing loop (and siding), but no signals - all signals are done by flag instead, with the signaller essentially being the interlocking instead.

There’s a trailer video out now for the Great Central Railway’s Railways At Work Gala. It’s an award-winning immersive historical event recreating a busy British mainline railway in the 1960s. I went to it last year and was blown away at how good it was. If you’re in the UK in mid-August, you have to go visit:
