Donald RoyThe last #kingofengland to go after #universities and seek to purge them was #Jamesthesecond in the 1680s . It did not end well - later he fled to #France where he died in exile in 1702 . With more time in power he might have attacked #harvard as well! Earlier still #henrytheeighth had agreed a law against #diversityofopinions in the 1540s - this resulted in various punishments including public burnings. Fortunately it had lapsed well before 1600.
@kittylyst #england - and #wales - did however pass a law against 'diversity of opinions' in the latter part of the reign of #henrytheeighth . It was repealed in the next reign.
