Here is the official JSA coverage of Day 15 via Hiro Morita and the Sumo Primetime crew:
For all the marbles!
Yokozuna Terunofuji and Sekiwake Kotonowaka faces off in a day 15 yusho playoff to decide the victor of Hatsu Basho!
Sekiwake Kotonowaka faces Tobizaru on Day 15 of Hatsu.
A Kotonowaka win would clinch at least a yusho doten playoff and likely Ozeki promotion.
Yokozuna Terunofuji faces Ozeki Kirishima in a consequence filled bout on Day 15.
- A Terunofuji win would clinch at least a yusho doten play off.
- A Kirishima win would clinch a jun yusho and cross the 25 win two tournament threshold for yokozuna consideration.
Post thoughts:
With Kirishima unable to clinch a yusho or 25th win over two basho, he won't ascend and allow the Kaiju to retire. The humiliating fashion of the Kaiju's victory will also linger as Kirishima's tsuna clock resets.
Kotonowaka's terrific 13 wins and doten should earn him Ozeki promotion as he clinched 33 wins in 3 basho.
He should join knee injured Hoshoryu, neck injured and kadoban Takakeisho and a humbled Kirishima in March.
Terunofuji (13-2) wrestled like the Kaiju on Sunday to earn his yusho!
He manhandled Kirishima (11-4), ending the latter's yokozuna hopes, picking him up like a child and throwing him ringside to force a playoff.
Kotonowaka (13-2) earlier beat Tobizaru (7-8) to earn his yusho doten playoff spot.
In the playoff, the Kaiju forced a slight hesitation from Kotonowaka as he settled his hips for a throw to edge him off the dohyo first.
Two of the most popular rikishi in sumo collide as former Ozeki Asanoyama faces Atamifuji on Day 14 of Hatsu.
Match of the day!
Sekiwake Kotonowaka faces Ozeki Kirishima on Day 14 of Hatsu Basho.
We have a tie going into Day 15!
Kotonowaka (12-2) overcame obvious nerves (2 false starts) to shock Kirishima (11-3) with a nodowa to pull to push combo!
Terunofuji (12-2) got a freebie as Hoshoryu (10-4) went kyujo with a knee injury.
If Kotonowaka defeats Tobizaru tmrw he likely clinches Ozeki and at least a yusho doten. Terunofuji has to beat Kirishima to win or force a playoff, but doing so would end the latter's own yokozuna run.
