this piece is based on Goldilocks and the Three Bears. It’s done in an Art Nouveau style heavily influenced by one of my art heroes, Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh.

It is completely Human-Made with out the “assistance” of any artificial generative nonsense. It was done entirely in Procreate, and took 6543 strokes over 8 hours and 40 minutes of working time.

This was the very very first piece I did after finding the work of Frances Macdonald McNair, who led me to discovering the Glasgow Four and their Scottish take on Art Nouveau. I then started contemplating the work of Charles “Rennie” Mackintosh.

I’ve always been enamored of the work of Pamela Zagarenski, too, and her capacity to collage texture. This image was a nod to her as well.

This piece was an exploration of textures and abstracted composition. I called it “Red ala Rennie”, and I worked to sort of reference the fairytale, Little Red Riding hood. I ended up making it a greeting card that you can find here:

Here’s the livestream recording of when it was made. I was in a dour mood and frustrated that I wasn’t putting much of myself into my art but simply “transcribing” reference imagery from photos. This was a huge HUGE step toward me embracing my own instincts and leaning into what I wanted to do.

This image was another in my series of Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh-inspired pieces. At this point, I was deep into discovering who the Glasgow Four were, and realized she was married to Charles, “Rennie” Mackintosh, the famous architect and stained glass artist.

I call this one “Thorned Blooms”, and I was trying to meld the Little Red Riding Hood tale with more symbolic and abstract “mood paintings” instead of illustrative storytelling.

Reached this point on this piece on my livestream tonight. It's a melding of inspiration from Ryan Cahill's The Bound and the Broken series, and the art of Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh. Both filtered through me... My first piece of fan art? Maybe? Sorta?

I had to stop myself from working on it after the stream--I'm so excited about this one!! I think things are finally sinking into my brain, resulting in a repeatable process I can start relying on. And the textures!!! They make me so happy!!

I have some color work to do, and I need to go back to add some details I missed. But it's going to be a real joy to do it!

Squeee!!! I can't wait to explore this more!!

It's coming along nicely! Slowly, but I'm happy with it. I have a lot more work inserting painted color (and then making it look like it's painted) as well as additional texture. But it's getting there!
