Genetic resources (Biodiversity 🦗)

Genetic resources are genetic material of actual or potential value, where genetic material means any material of plant, animal, microbial or other origin containing functional units of heredity. Genetic resources is one of the three levels of biodiversity defined by the Convention on Biological Diversity in Rio, 1992.

Whether it is firestick farming used to sustainably manage Country, or the engineering of great stone fish traps across rivers and seas.

Whether it was the practices of cultivating crops over tens of thousands of years, or the discovery and use of potent natural medicines.

That unbroken line of innovation has continued to this day, despite what was wrought by the fiction of terra nullius.

The traditional knowledge of Australia's First Peoples transformed this land.

Made it liveable, made it home.

That knowledge deserves international recognition.

This treaty does just that.'

It aims to enhance transparency in the #patents system by requiring applicants to disclose the country of origin of any GR and the Indigenous Peoples/local community who provided associated TK. Countries may establish GR & TK databases, but for use in the search and examination of patent applications only.
