Huzzah! A breakthrough!

After a week of fiddling and trying various outdated tutorials, I *finally* got my D-Link DWM-222 USB Modem thing to send, and read, SMS texts on a #RaspberryPi (4B) running #ubuntu2404, using #gammu.

Turns out, I needed to downgrade the DWM's firmware, to a very specific different version, using a Windows PC first. Obviously. 🙄 Hey. It was only the 6th(?) firmware version I tried.

But yay! Progress!!

Looking for some #FediHelp with some #RaspberryPi stuff - #BoostsWelcomed I'm trying to set up a #RPi4 to interact with #SMS messages (in the UK, eventually, but setup/testing in AotearoaNZ). Many moons ago, I had something similar going with a USB dongle from Vodafone, and #gammu - however it only worked with Vodafone SIMs. I'm wanting something not SIM locked, but that still does SMS (all the things I see online seem to be 3G/4G focussed). Recommendations please?

@localish GSM modems are getting rare because hotspots have become popular. I can’t find them in local shops anymore. Not sure brand is important but I’d want a model that is linux-supported & #wammu / #gammu compatible for versatility. In principle an openwrt or ddwrt router could look for wifi & use the GSM as a secondary option. It could VPN somewhere, or be a tor gateway.

After some painful trial and error I managed to backup all SMSs, contacts and images stored on my 2005 Nokia phone.

I was able to even convert the SMS backup to an mbox archive thanks to #Gammu and #Wammu, so now I can import them on Thunderbird.

Also, now I can make calls and send SMSs from the command line 😌

- Bonjour monsieur le port série !
- Bonjour #Gammu !
- Pouvez-vous éjecter le CDROM s'il vous plaît ?
- Je m'excuse, je ne peux pas éjecter le CDROM, puisque je ne suis pas un port série.
