I feel like part of the reason Ghasts stick out as a particularly annoying mob in Minecraft is because they're the only hostile nether mob that doesn't have a trick to make you safe from them.
-Blazes are basically helpless against you if you have fire resistance (and only appear near nether fortresses)
-Endermen are thwarted by pumpkins and boats
-Hoglins are terrified of warped fungi
-Magma cubes (besides being slow) can't fit through spaces that you can fit through unless they're already small enough to not really be dangerous anyway
-Piglins run from soul fire and their zombified kin, and won't attack you if you're wearing gold stuff
-Piglin brutes won't attack you as long as you stay away from their bastion remnants
-Skeletons are afraid of wolves (and only show up in soul sand valleys and fortresses anyway)
-Wither skeletons are afraid of wolves and don't fit through two block high gaps (and only appear in nether fortresses)
So basically, if you stay away from fortresses, soul sand valleys and bastions, wear a bit of gold, keep warped fungi on hand, and ensure the entrance to your area is no more than one block wide, you'll be safe. And even if you do go to nether fortresses, bringing a dog and fire resistance potions will put you back safe again.
That is, you *would* be safe, if not for ghasts. The only trick for dealing with ghasts is to hit their fireballs back at them, which really only helps if you don't have a bow handy to shoot them down with manually. There's no trick to make it so ghasts can't see you or won't shoot at you, or to stop their fireballs from getting near enough to endanger you or your build, or a trick to stop them from spawning. Sure they don't spawn in crimson or warped forests, but what are the odds you're going to find one of those which stretches out 128 blocks in every direction (including up and down) without having any pockets of a biome that can spawn ghasts?
Ghasts are the biggest reason why it's hard to survive in the nether. They may have a very low spawn rate, but that doesn't matter much when they can cause as much pain and destruction as they can. All of the nether's other dangers can be easily subverted or prevented, but not ghasts.
I really think there should be some way to protect yourself from ghasts; maybe ghast fireballs don't explode if crying obsidian is nearby, or ghasts can't see you near the stuff? Or maybe ghasts will ignore you if you're wearing a certain piece of equipment? Or maybe ghasts are just repelled by nether fungus. I dunno, I just feel like there needs to be *some* way to reliably make oneself safe from ghasts.
