Danish furniture brand Fritz Hansen acquires Skagerak

Danish furniture brand Fritz Hansen has purchased fellow Danish furniture company Skagerak and will now add outdoor furniture to its range of products.

Skagerak, which was founded in Denmark in 1976, was purchased by Fritz Hansen as part of its "ambitious" growth strategy that aims to "strengthen distribution channels and showrooms across Asia, central Europe and North America".

No financial details of the acquisition of the company that designs and manufactures furniture for indoors and outdoors were revealed.

"Skagerak and Fritz Hansen are a natural fit"

The purchase of Skagerak means Fritz Hansen will now sell outdoor furniture in addition to its existing furniture, lighting and accessories.

Among Skagerak's products are pieces such as the indoor-outdoor furniture collection Lily, which was designed in collaboration with Danish architecture firm BIG.

"Skagerak and Fritz Hansen are a natural fit," Fritz Hansen CEO Josef Kaiser said.

"Both are rooted in Nordic design traditions and responsible manufacturing and synonymous with furniture and interior design of the highest quality. With the acquisition of Skagerak we can now offer our customers, private and professional, a larger product offering whilst strengthening our business in our home market as well as internationally."

Fritz Hansen explanding globally

Skagerak's CEO Jesper Panduro said the acquisition gives Skagerak a "perfect home".

"Skagerak stands for longevity and responsibility when it comes to design and aesthetics, ensuring the products we make will last for generations," he said.

"We are very happy to become part of the Fritz Hansen family and a company with an outstanding reputation, a strong culture and a long-term perspective. We have found the perfect home for Skagerak."

Fritz Hansen is currently expanding globally and recently opened a showroom in Shanghai to be its newest outpost in China.

The brand has worked with numerous well-known designers, including Nendo and Vico Magistretti, which have both launched chairs together with the Danish company.

Fritz Hansen launches chair and table designs to make the office more inviting

Dezeen promotion: Danish furniture brand Fritz Hansen aims to bring more sophistication to the workspace with a rework of a midcentury chair by Arne Jacobsen and a more versatile version of its multifunctional Pluralis table.

With offices now forced to compete with the convenience and flexibility of remote working, Fritz Hansen believes it is more important than ever for workspaces to offer a standard of quality.

Fritz Hansen wants to bring more inspiration to the workspace

With its two latest products – the Oxford chair by the late Danish architect Jacobsen and a new version of the Pluralis table by Danish designer Kasper Salto – the brand hopes to offer a more inspiring work environment.

"Moving from the traditional to the inspirational, the inviting workspace is one that encourages communication, collaboration and creativity," said Fritz Hansen.

"It is shaped by beauty and function to motivate people to do their best," it continued, "because an inspiring workspace creates inspired people."

The Oxford task chair is a design that Jacobsen originally created in 1965 for professors at the prestigious St Catherine's College at Oxford University.

The chair has a simple shape that gives it a classic feel. The seat and backrest are created by a rectangular form that appears to have been softly folded in the middle.

Fritz Hansen has reworked the design to make it more ergonomic, by lengthening the seating and adding additional padding for lumbar support.

The design comes in low- and mid-height versions, in either fabric or leather. The seat sits either on castors or a swivel base, available in a range of finishes, and armrests can be added.

"Retaining the same silhouette as its original form but with improved comfort and customisation, the Oxford chair is upgraded for a new generation of workspaces," said Fritz Hansen.

The Pluralis table is a design intended to offer optimal flexibility, so it could serve as either a workstation or a meeting table. It features a streamlined tabletop with curved chamfers in its corners, which rests on slender legs that angle out towards the corners.

The new version offers more ergonomic support than the 1965 original

With the new addition of a centre leg piece, the design has become more adaptable than ever.

The table can be prolonged by combining three tabletops and two middle legs, creating a 7.2 metre table. In this way, tables can be placed in infinitely long rows.

The table surface is available in veneer, laminate or linoleum, and comes in a variety of different widths and lengths.

Power sockets can be integrated in different ways, including concealed beneath a matching surface.

"Balancing fine furniture design with function, Pluralis serves every office need with its considered combination of features and extensive configuration options," said Fritz Hansen.

Power sockets can be concealed within the table surface

N02 Recycle chair by Nendo for Fritz Hansen is made from household plastic waste

**Dezeen Showroom: **Danish design company Fritz Hansen has reintroduced its N02 Recycle chair, which was created by Nendo from recycled plastic, with a range of new features.

Nendo founder Oki Sato was inspired by a piece of folded paper on his studio table, which gave the piece its signature back crease. This creates extra back support as well as being decorative.

The N02 Recycle chair is made from household plastic waste that has been processed and recycled in Europe and can be recycled again at the end of its life.

The N02 Recycle chair can be used in meeting rooms, presentation spaces and offices

Updated features for the stackable chair include new bar and counter heights as well as a new transport dolly and invisible protection for stool footrests.

The design comes in seven different colours that reference the warm hues found in Scandinavian nature and was conceived as a meeting of Scandinavian and Japanese design languages.

It can be stacked up to four at a time

"Collaborating with studio Nendo meant the design would be simple and elegant – the perfect blend of Scandinavian and Japanese aesthetics," said Fritz Hansen's head of design Christian Andresen.

Last year, the No2 Recycle chair was awarded the EU Ecolabel for its N02-10 and N02-11 versions with powder-coated legs.

N02 Recycle chair by Nendo for Fritz Hansen is made from household plastic waste

Danish design company Fritz Hansen has reintroduced its N02 Recycle chair, which was created by Nendo from recycled plastic, with a range of new features.

Fritz Hansen updates sustainable N02 Recycle chair informed by folded paper

Dezeen promotion: Danish brand Fritz Hansen's relaunched N02 Recycle chair, designed in collaboration with Japanese studio Nendo, is made from plastic household waste and has been awarded the EU-Ecolabel.

Fritz Hansen is launching an updated version of its N02 Recycle chair, which was first released in 2019 and has a backrest that was informed by a folded piece of paper on Nendo founder Oki Sato's studio table. This simple, elegant design provides support for both the upper and lower back.

The chair is stackable and comes in seven different colours

The compact, light chair is made from recycled plastic from household waste that was processed and upcycled in central Europe, and was awarded the EU-Ecolabel – the official European environmental certification – in 2020.

The label was given to the N02-10 and the N02-11 with powder-coated legs to show that the chairs meet the European Union's ecological requirements.

N02 Recycle is made from upcycled household plastic

"The EU-Ecolabel stands for strict environmental requirements in all relevant phases of the product’s life cycle," said Fritz Hansen head of design Christian Andresen.

"Everything from raw materials to production, use, disposal and recycling is included in the assessment."

The design now comes in new bar and counter heights

This edition of the N02 Recycle chair also has a range of new features, including new bar and counter heights, and can come with or without armrests.

Users can choose from four-legged, sledge and swivel base versions to suit both work and social spaces, such as meeting rooms or canteens.

The chair, which has an almost graphic look with its slender legs and curved back, can be stacked up to four at a time and comes in seven different colours. Informed by the warm tones found in Scandinavian nature, these include a vibrant orange, a saturated dark blue and a pale grey.

In this video for Dezeen, Sato explained how the chair was made to follow circular design principles and how it combines Japanese purity and minimalism with the "warmth and softness" of Scandinavian design.

"We wanted to do a versatile, plastic stacking chair in recycled materials," added Andresen.

"Collaborating with studio Nendo meant the design would be simple and elegant – the perfect blend of Scandinavian and Japanese aesthetics."

The colours of the N02 Recycle chairs were informed by Scandinavian nature

Designing a chair from recycled plastic is part of Fritz Hansen's work to reduce the overall impact on the climate and environment, as the company aims to combine quality and sustainability in its products.

As well as being made from upcycled plastic, the N02 Recycle chair can itself be recycled at the end of its life, helping to create a circular economy.
