Sometimes I come across things on eBay that really fascinate me. 416 million years old, and valued at £25.99. For something so beautiful and so ancient, it seems a massive injustice and a huge undervaluation to me.

“Long, long, long ago, giant millipedes roamed through the dense tropical forests that covered #Fife. And, 310 million years later, their footprints can be still be seen! Arthropleura, as these gigantic, #prehistoric woodlice (or slaters) are officially known, left a trail of 20 cm-wide tracks on an outcrop of sandstone near #Boarhills, alongside a mini-forest of #fossilised, #prehistoric tree roots.”

Some 60 million years ago, a little moth landed on an ancient sycamore tree to lay eggs. The larvae grew, nestled inside a comfy enclosure between the leaf’s thin layers. Once hatched, they ate their way through to the surface and left to perpetuate their kin. Most of the chewed-up leaves swirled down to the earth, decomposing shortly after.

But the leaf was #fossilised and we therefore know that modern #insects are far more disastrous for #plants.

But why?
