Disinformation and fake news played a key role in influencing the outcomes of these two major political events that had far-reaching consequences beyond the U.S. and the UK. Social media platforms acted as the virtual battleground for these campaigns, allowing for faster distribution and broader reach. The recent rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI) begs the question of what this will mean for the future of democracy. How can we ensure electoral integrity and protect democratic values when the lines between true and false are increasingly blurred?
