According to the UN education and culture organization, UNESCO, which monitors press freedom, 93 journalists were killed in 2025 alone – 60 of them in conflict zones. UN News spoke to Sylvie Coudray, Director of UNESCO’s Division for Freedom of Expression, Media Development, and Media and Information Literacy ahead of World Press Freedom Day.
It billed itself as a “more than a newspaper, a community institution” for most of its history, but former employees of the McKeesport Daily News said on Sunday it was actually a family.
During an event to mark World Press Freedom Day — and the 10th anniversary of the newspaper’s closing — former employees and local residents gathered at McKeesport Regional History & Heritage Center to celebrate the publication’s legacy:

Das Motto des Internationalen Tages der Pressefreiheit am 3. Mai lautet heuer: „Eine Zukunft in Frieden gestalten: Pressefreiheit für Menschenrechte, Entwicklung und Sicherheit fördern.“
Während bei der World Press Freedom Day Global Conference am 04. und 05. Mai in Lusaka, Sambia, über diese Themen gesprochen wird, spinne, stricke und häkle ich im Atelier Mitzi für die Pressefreiheit: Mit meiner Handspindel stelle ich aus alten Zeitungen Papiergarn her. Daraus entstehen gehäkelte Körbe und gestrickte Stücke.
