I think of range-extended vehicles as those that perhaps double the range of the #BEV in a (hopefully) #ZEV. IOW, total energy output from the engine/fuel cell ≈ to stored battery energy. That is true for many of the range extenders to-date, including the ICE range extenders.
The battery in a #FCEV system is primarily for starting the vehicle, regenerative braking & acceleration. FCEV battery capacity is a small fraction of the energy contained in the H2 gas.
