When using #ext4magic its a bit disappointing how important the '-f' flag is. the flag is for identifying the folder to recover files from, if you don't use it and there is an error elsewhere, then the only output you might get is "Segmentation fault" and there is surprisingly little in docs or on the web to indicate how to get around that.

A typical way to use the -f flag is:

(...) -f 'folder/where/deleted/file/was/' (...)

There are a number of errors that get thrown up when trying to use ext4magic, sadly they are not well documented in man pages, nor even online! the cloudflare hosted repository seemed lacking in up to date information. the archlinux wiki is probably the best resource (EDIT but not even that explained what the error codes meant).

i hope this helps someone in the vast, magical  fediverse #filerecovery #gnulinux #linuxtips

File recovery - ArchWiki

The recovery program (#ext4magic) has a histogram option that seems to some accurately when files were deleted.... seems to be working fine vvv

----d_time Histogram-------- after --- 1533 |**************************| 116 |** | 0 | | 0 | | 0 | | 0 | | 0 | | 0 | | 1 |*

but yea the actual data recovery operation brings up nothing.

anyone here have exp with file recovery after a basic delete.

tried #ext4magic but nothing is appearing in the recovered files folder. i even tried deleting a file and then unmounting the file system an trying to see if ext4magic could find it and STILL nothing.

ideas? suggestions welcome.
