Until about 1994, most Emigre fonts were sold on floppy disks. (Later, they were provided on CDs.) Orders for fonts were placed by phone or fax, and disks were sent out by FedEx or UPS.

“When Emigre donated its comprehensive archive to @letterformarchive in 2016, one of the issues that came up was how to best preserve Zuzana Licko’s type design process. This was a challenge, because Zuzana rarely made sketches for her fonts. … Now, thanks to the expertise and ingenuity of @frankrolf, using a variety of tools, including @drawBot … get a peek behind the scenes of the early stages of iconic digital typefaces.” https://www.emigre.com/DigitalFontSketches
Zuzana Licko's unique type design process involved minimal sketching, relying instead on direct digital exploration starting from the era of bitmap fonts in 1984. Her work primarily took place on the computer, with printouts serving as visual aids and records of progress and changes. Despite challenges in preserving early digital drafts due to evolving technology, contemporary efforts by type designer Frank Grießhammer have successfully recreated and saved Licko's original digital sketches into PDF format, capturing the essence of her innovative design approach.
