@jtheibault Probably the key is "dürfen", used as "bedürfen", i.e. "require", "need" (https://www.woerterbuchnetz.de/DWB/dürfen, 1.) A device usually has text that is a statement ("does not"), not a proscription ("shall not"). The reading then: "Fortune does not require skills!" (contrary to Wander, "Kunst bedarff Glück und Glück bedarff der Kunst", https://woerterbuchnetz.de/?sigle=Wander&lemid=K01882, 112). The image would be helpful, too (coat of arms or device?). I’d like to see it.

Marcus Garvey saying the whole world is our country until alignment takes place. Similarly İ think what a wonder it would be to have a Diasporic book of fiction/fact with the same range of beauty, sadness, and insight. Tananarive Due could do it, surely. Octavia Butler surely had strength and *Wild Seed* is indication of that.
