As a point of comparison: there have been *very few* articles on the #ejercitoespia leaks here in Mexico, due to state intimidation of media outlets that report on it, and a lot of people had to turn to NY Times articles about it. People outside of Mexico would probably be like, "oh, of course" because of the kinds of ideas they have about Mexico

As the UK is a traditionally and still majority white country, they don't draw those same kinds of conclusions about the UK when the UK fails to report on unfavorable things about itself

Yet there were still *some* news outlets here that reported on the leaks, in the UK there's *nothing* on the UN report

Hoy volví a ver Battle Royale, después de leer las noticias por la mañana de una manifestación militar contra los derechos humanos, y después de una semana de nuevas revelaciones de #EjércitoEspía, y me parece más vigente que nunca. La manera en que los militares condenan a los jóvenes a una vida sin futuro, la manera en que un poco de desconfianza en un momento clave puede echar todo a perder (la escena del faro), que siempre hay un psicópata que simplemente quiere verlo arder y que estará jugando a favor del poder, el patetismo del poder interpretado perfectamente por Beat Takeshi, y la manera en que el poder puede tener misericordia por dos tres personas pero nunca parará sus juegos sádicos...

Mr. López Obrador, who took office in 2018, promised that his administration would never spy on its opponents.

The new evidence of military spying suggests Mr. López Obrador, as commander in chief of the armed forces, either knew about the surveillance and tolerated it, experts said — or his own subordinates disobeyed him.

“Both scenarios are terrible, but all the evidence we have points to the army spying on its own initiative and for its own interests,” said Catalina Pérez Correa, an expert on the military at Mexico’s Center for Research and Teaching in Economics.

“Taking into account the enormous economic power it has and all the state functions it controls,” Ms. Pérez Correa said, “you could say that Mexico has the building blocks for a military state.”

Under Mr. López Obrador, the military has taken on far greater responsibility for policing, as well as controlling the nation’s ports and customs, building part of a 1,000-mile train line and even distributing medicine. The number of troops deployed across the country is at its highest point in recent history.
