Hey #easst4s2024 @easst crowd. I fear yesterday was unexpectedly my last day at the conference, due to testing positive for COVID this morning.

If you’re feeling not 100%, you might also want to get a couple of tests, which luckily are quite cheaply available in pharmacies in the Netherlands.

can't go wrong with Suchman

"As soon as computational artifacts demonstrate some evidence of recognizably human abilities, we are inclined to endow them with the rest."

I went to #easst4s, and all I got was some cool #WeDoSTS stickers! Thanks @jume

Protip for @easst organisers and #easst4s2024 folks: with a conference that happens only once every four years and that has a low-traffic acronym like #EASST4S, there is no need to have year-specific hashtags. Predictable confusion & fractured convos could be prevented by keeping to a single, clear, maximally short hashtag like #easst4s — variants like #easst4s24 and #easst4s2024 just add extra ballast

I know it's day 4 so maybe this comes in handy in 2028 🤣

"Infrastructures must die.
We don't design for death.
So much (architecture) is aging but we don't know how to let it die."

P296: LLMs and the language sciences: material, semiotic, and linguistic perspectives from STS and linguistic anthropology

This panel convenes linguistic anthropology and STS to consider how large language models (LLMs) emerge from language-ideological and material-semiotic practices. We invite papers that contribute to better understanding the constitutive work of LLMs at multiple stages and via multiple stakeholders.

During a break at #easst4s24 I went to foam (the Amsterdam photography museum), which currently has Çiğdem Yüksel's “Ctrl.Alt.Img" on display.

It's an interactive piece that uses “#AI" to first generate assumptions of the viewer based on facial/image recognition. Afterwards it prompts you to describe your identity and then generates a “portrait image” based on that prompt.

P340: More-than human research and innovation

This panel brings multispecies studies into conversation with STS. We focus on the productive unruliness of multispecies collaborations and seek to think about the in/exclusion of other-than human stakeholders in research and innovation, as well as its governance.

My partner is ill so I cant make it to EASST but I would love to try and be part of it a bit. If anyone is up for streaming any sessions that would be amazing!
