The Banquet Hall - The decor is all about the Middle Ages, and the massive fireplace shows Robert, Earl of Gloucester, an illegitimate son of King Henry I and the guy who ruled Cardiff Castle in the 12th century, in battle.

The Banquet Hall is the biggest room in the castle and sits in the oldest part of the building, which dates back to the 15th century.

But the ceiling and floors? They’re actually a Victorian twist on a fancy medieval hall, and it took almost 15 years to finish.

#EelRent exploration! at https://historiacartarum.org/eel-rents-project/english-eel-rents-10th-17th-centuries/

#Sudbury in 1086 owed rent of 100 #eels to Henry de Ferrers.

#Chesterton near #Cambridge c.1250 owed 1,000 eels to its vicarage.

#Lakenheath in 1020 owed 4,000 eels to the Abbey at #BuryStEdmunds. In 1315 it instead owed 4,300 eels to the #EarlOfGloucester - but the last earl had just died at the Battle of #Bannockburn. His widow claimed to be pregnant with an heir - so probably took delivery of the eels?
