I planted a bare stick of winter sweet beside the clothes line but had to wait many years before it flowered. Now it is well-established and shares its wonderful scent early winter.

In the years before the cornflowers took over this garden, there were the bright colours of calendulas and viscaria. The calendulas still appear summer and winter, but it’s only occasionally that the bit of viscaria gets in before the cornflowers expand to fill most the space.

Cut flowers from the year I grew tulips. I’m a huge fan of things that come back year after year whether by self-sowing or from bulbs and tubers. The poppies haven’t been a huge success on that front so I haven’t persevered with them.
