A movie of exquisite close-ups. The tea burbling into Reynolds's cup. His calloused and pricked hands guiding needle and thread through the fabric of a garment. His eye in the light of the peephole. The perfectly lit food (even the asparagus and butter Reynolds hates so much). Cyril's pencil scribbling Alma's name smartly in the notebook before recording her measurements. Everything not in close-up is beautiful to look at, too, but something about the intimacy of those tight shots felt key to the whole project this time around, in a movie centered on people of detail and obsession. Felt like a precursor to the '80s slasher, the personality of Quint and the camaraderie he shared with the other two on the boat replaced with the collective horny impulses and bad decisions of Amity's teens. Was for some reason deeply invested in the kid from Christine making it out alive, but otherwise I missed the quiet of the first film.
