I wonder if it's a common response from people (and not just from me) to unsettling world events, to decide to plant some vegetable seeds in the back garden this year.

And, of course, growing vegetables could be a romantic endeavour according to Britain's Ministry of Information in this 1942 photo documenting the "Dig for Victory" campaign. #digforvictory #ww2 #secondworldwar #moi #propaganda
Britain's Ministry of Information also highlighted that school children could be involved in growing vegetables as part of their "Dig for Victory" campaign. These children from 1942 are gardening as part of a school lesson. #digforvictory #ww2 #secondworldwar #moi #propaganda

"Dig for Victory" was one of the most successful of Britain's Ministry of Information publicity campaigns. This photo from 1943 shows Kew Gardens' model allotment with the iconic orangery in the background. #digforvictory #ww2 #secondworldwar #moi #propaganda #kewgardens

@spenbroc I was surprised to see kale on there. It’s one of my winter staples and favourite veg but I didn’t have it down as a Dig for Victory veg. I thought it was a relatively recent introduction to our UK diets.

Thank you, that’s one of my misconceptions put right. Always a good thing.

@spenbroc I love those old #DigForVictory leaflets. I collect all the original books and leaflets I can find, plus the #HomeFront #cookbooks and flyers. They’re so much fun!
What's next? #Tractors ploughing the lawns at #Stormont as part of #DigForVictory? Got that. German U-boats surrendering in #Derry? Yep. Laurence #Olivier giving the opening speech at #UTV in 1959? Yeah, that's there, but I know you want to see tiny #daleks getting off a plane in 1964.
