They Blew Out The Power

That’s kind of all you need to know about a good hardcore show. Like, if a folk blues tour knocked out the power, that’d be weird. But if ferocious hardcore bands like Odd Man Out, Beton Arme, Home Front, or Angel Du$t did it, than like, yeah, that’s wicked cool.

And that’s also what happened. They had to end the show early because the venue literally couldn’t contain their power. Neat!

Normally at the Marquis, the first band on the bill gets a light crowd, and I had no reason to think differently this night. Which is why I got punched ten seconds into the show starting – the front of stage was light because it was a mosh pit, not because it was the start of a show. That’s on me.

And that’s also how the rest of the night went. Fuck Trump, get punched, knock out power. Dive off stage, two step, knock out power. Build up community, mosh, knock out power.

If you listen to these bands, and I’ve posted some Home Front before so you may have, you wouldn’t think they’d be such problem creators. But this was the first time I think I can say, in my decade plus covering music, that people showed up for the vibes and vibes alone. Not even Aqua had that, and people dressed like the 80’s for that show.

What I mean is, these bands aren’t necessarily aggressive. I’ve seen more intense music at the Marquis. But I’ve never seen a more intense crowd. I’ve never been punched so early on, I’ve never seen the crowd so freely rush the stage, and I’ve never seen so many power failures in one show. And that’s because these bands are vibes first, and also vibes second, but their vibes are “punch you in the chest” vibes.

Which made this a damn impressive hardcore show. Perhaps even a Must See.

HOME FRONT (CA) + LÄRM

OCCII, Thursday, June 11 at 08:00 AM GMT+2

HOME FRONT at OCCII, do you need more?!

HOME FRONT (CAN, LA VIDA ES UN MUS)

Ok… HOME FRONT from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, have been blasting out of everyone’s stereos for the past 3 years with their unique combination of THE CURE, BLITZ, EURYTHMICS, and SUICIDE wrapped up with modern production and tightly wound hooks. Unrelenting 2nd LP “Watch It Die” soars high and reaches deep with frayed punk edges wrapping around canonic pop luxury. A record about moving through life while acknowledging death, about humanity, rebirth, dreams and community — all powered by vintage drum machines, analogue synths and screaming guitars. A punk pop crossover treat like no other.

LÄRM (hardcore/punk legends, NL)

LÄRM specializes in those short, sharp political attacks of noise/thrash that amaze/dismay – Maximum Rock N Roll, 1985.

It’s LÄRM, you have to be there!

#4 Domestic support erodes. Mueller (1973): public backing drops in direct proportion to casualties, regardless of military results. This killed support for Vietnam. It is directly relevant to Iran today.

Most #JasonStatham movies are not worth it. I've mentioned #Homefront and Crank: High Voltage.

The only reason that I stuck with #TheBeekeeper (2024), despite Statham once again strutting around muttering expressionlessly, fighting people, and stealing other people's cars, was the cast of British actors (from #MinnieDriver through #JemmaRedgrave to #DonGilet) all putting on their best General American accents and pretending to be the upper echelons of the U.S.A. intelligence services and government.

I was also intrigued by the #bees, but that part was rubbish.

There are holes in the plot that one could drive a truck through. Indeed, Statham does drive a truck through one, and ride underneath a truck over another. The whole premise of the movie is stupid, and it is nothing more than a bunch of fight scenes strung together, but not with anything like the panache of Kill Bill.

Of course they've already made a sequel. I can make a good guess what Statham will be doing.

Home Front / Bootlicker (NDY #947)

East End United Church, Saturday, May 16 at 07:00 PM EDT

HOME FRONT, Canada’s band, return to Toronto May 16th!

Has there been a band that more perfectly captures that post-pandemic ennui than HOME FRONT? We’ve never been shy to show our love for our fellow Canucks. And their second full length, “Watch it Die,” once again highlights their uncanny ability to craft meaningful music that is incredibly catchy. Songs indebted to their deep love for punk’s past, that so beautifully captures how we’re feeling today. You’re born alone. You die alone. You don’t have to live alone.

They’re joined by fellow Western Canadian maniacs BOOTLICKER. A band whose speed is only matched by their ability to write a sick riff.

And you’ll find us, back at the East End United Church for an all ages affair.
