long ago I read an in-depth tech article about the development of an MMO which I was addicted to for a while (Dark Age of Camelot aka #DAoC) and they went into detail about how sticking with perfectly usable built-in Linux tools saved them immense amounts of dev time and money when scaling what was essentially a MUD into a massively multiplayer real-time 3D game. between that and seeing how Proxmox largely follows the same strategy with great success, it's left an impression on me about premature optimization, at least in the sysadmin domain. I still find it hard to resist when coding or doing many other things irl.
