Skye Boat Song เป็นทำนองเพลงพื้นบ้านดั้งเดิม แต่คำร้องฉบับที่คุ้นกันมากที่สุด คงหนีไม่พ้นฉบับที่เล่าถึงเหตุการณ์สมมติเรื่อง การเดินทางของ #เจ้าชายชาร์ลีสุดหล่อ (Bonnie Prince Charlie) ผู้นำทางจิตวิญญาณของกลุ่ม ที่หลบหนีจากทหารอังกฤษหลังการยุทธ์ที่ทุ่ง Culloden

สำหรับเหตุการณ์ที่นำมาสู่เรื่องราวนี้ คงต้องท้าวความตั้งแต่ประวัติศาสตร์ของบริเตนตั้งแต่ยุคพระเจ้าเสือ ถึงต้นกำเนิดของกลุ่ม Jacobite ที่เล่าได้ simplified ได้ดังนี้ (ขออนุญาตไม่ใช่ราชาศัพท์เพื่อความเข้าใจง่าย)

ความจริงเรื่องราวมีรายละเอียดเยอะกว่านี้ และความขัดแย้งมีตั้งแต่ยุคสมัยพระราชบิดาของราชินีแอนน์ แต่อาจจะเล่าแล้วยืดยาวเกินไป... ทว่าบริบทเท่านี้ น่าจะพอให้เข้าใจบางบทบางตอนของเพลง Skye Boat Song ได้บ้าง เช่น Carry the lad that's born to be king หรือวรรคสุดท้ายที่บอกกันแบบขวานผ่าซากมากว่า...
