It's 1959, you need a female stand-up singer.... Once Around The Clock - Patricia Scot #ctproduced #jazz #creed taylor

A major refresh of an earlier article that includes a great deal of new content. 1959 saw Taylor and Bob (Kenyon) Hokins record arrangements for Patricia Scot's only album. I've added a great deal of detail on how she got there and what happened next.
Remembering Esther Phillips on the day she would have been 89-years old.
I've written a lot about Esther, I have a soft spot for her singing and am fascinated by her life story.
I have at least one more piece to write based on some history from #johnnyotis - It explains a great deal about why Esther made some of the choices she did.
For today though, I want to remember a ballsy woman who once walked into Creed Taylors office with a baseball bat under her fur coat to demand her royalty check.

Hey, citizens of the fediverse - I just wanted to remember the great Grover Washington, Jr. who left us this day, 25-years ago. Far too soon. Such a talent, such a nice, kind man.
Just 5-days after celebrating his 56th birthday, Grover had a heart attack in the green room, after performing and recording four songs for “The Saturday Early Show”, at CBS Studios in New York City. He was pronounced dead at 7:30pm that day, December 17th, 1999, St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in New York City.
He was still working in a department store when his first

album came out, he got to put it in the racks. You can find all this plus at least 2x live sets; a ctproduced mix and so much more. https://www.ctproduced.com/jazzjump/
Mondo Cane #2 – The Worst Jazz Album Creed Produced?
Pop goes the ondioline - A really quite unusual production by Creed Taylor, but was it jazz? Kai Winding's "Mondo Cane #2" despite consisting of 12 short tracks diverges into space-era pop with Hawaiian themes, not pure jazz. Winding plays the ondioline on several tracks, attempting to capitalize on earlier success. A lo

Remembering Rudy Van Gelder on his born day. Rudy crafted much of the sound that we understand as (east coast) jazz these days. In an era of non-disposable equipment, Rudy developed habits in recording that lasted the test of time.
That said, he wasn't slow in adopting new technology, and wasn't afraid of taking on the establishment when it came to digital vs analog.

CTI Record Streams
While I continue working on a couple of research projects that have consumed the past 6-weeks, I realized I hadn't posted here much, although I continue to dance of the grave of what used to be social-media daily. Here is a brief post on an interesting stream I've been listening too while screaming into the void - that the internet has become.

I've had two great interviews this weekend with Alen MacWeeney. Alen was the ying to Pete Turners yang for album covers at CTI/KUDU. Where #PeteTurner did abstract, brightly colored covers that rarely included the artist, Alen included detailed closely cropped covers of the artist with a muted palate.
I'll be writing it up for ctproduced.com in May. In the meantime here are three great pictures Alen took. #CTIrecords #Kudu #CreedTaylor #AlenMacWeeney #AlbumArt #Vinyl #photography #ctproduced
This is a jazztodon exclusive. I've just finished a quick post about a second #georgebenson live performance as part of the 1975 Newport Jazz festival. It was at Carnegie Hall, but was 6-months after his live album released on #CTI.
It was almost a year to the day before Benson would blow the doors off with his album Breezin'. It includes a live stream and download link.
It won't be live until July 3rd, but here is a preview link. #ctproduced #jazz zz #miltjackson

New on ctproduced, The passing of Kwame Brathwaite. Rather than just make the same notes as everyone else, I tried to make it relevant and interesting.
I've got a uncredited album picture, two covers and details about George Benson "Live At Carnegie Hall" album that you won't read anywhere else.
