Chainalysis reports that more than $3.4B in cryptocurrency has been stolen in 2025 (flat overall with 2024).

North Korea remains dominant crypto threat actor with North Korean hackers having a banner year pilfering ~ $2.02B, a 51% increase over last year.

While the total # of hacks is down, there has been a shift toward dramatically larger attacks, with the top three hacks accounting for 69% of losses. Individual wallet compromises jumped up to 158,000 incidents affecting 80,000 unique victims in 2025.

ChainAlysis reports that crypto crimes are becoming broader and more complex. Noteworthy, is the emergence of large-scale on-chain services providing infrastructure supporting illicit actors with crypto-laundering.

The estimate for total crypto crime in 2024 is approx. $51B which represents 0.14% of total on-chain transaction volume. This is a slight decrease from 2023, and likely underestimates the true total. On average, crypto crime is increasing approx. 25% per year. 63% of all illicit transactions involve stablecoins. Scams involving Bitcoin (BTC) have deceased since 2021.
