Researchers compared 22 language models and 102 human participants on three verbal creativity tasks to examine how AI influences creative thinking. Individual models produced original responses, but across models outputs were markedly more similar than human responses, indicating homogenization among AI-generated ideas. Adjusting randomness and prompts partially increased originality but did not resolve the uniformity, suggesting potential limits to AI-assisted brainstorming.

By contrasting human divergent and associative thinking with AI outputs on standard creativity tasks, the study highlights cognitive diversity, originality, and how training data shapes thought. This topic interests psychology because it probes how creativity emerges, the role of context and tools in thought, and the implications for human problem solving when using AI as a brainstorming aid.

Large-scale comparisons between generative AI and tens of thousands of people illuminate creativity-related processes, a topic of significance for mental health professionals, including psychotherapists, clinical social workers, and other practitioners focusing on creativity, cognition, and expression. The study notes that AI systems such as GPT-4 can perform strongly on originality and idea-generation tasks, sometimes surpassing the average human. Yet the most creative individuals—particularly the top 10%—still exceed AI performance on richer creative work like poetry and storytelling, underscoring the enduring value of nuanced human expression in therapeutic and relational contexts.

Colleagues, what are your favorite mid-to-long form articles and essays about #writing and #creativity

I’m teaching a new upper-level seminar on writing and creativity. We’ll be thinking about topics like process, inspiration, cognition, collaboration, and tech tools (generative AI, but not only that).

Chapters from Anne Lamott’s *Bird by Bird* and Liz Gilbert’s *Big Magic* are already on my radar. What else do you suggest? What authors or creators’ reflections on their own work do you love to read?

This is resonating with me this morning as I research building an #apparel company (‘brand’ makes me vomit) and #designing #merch. More specifically: what kind of merch I want to make.

I am not a fan of the ‘learn & follow trends’ advice for selling merch. I can’t relate to it and I’ve abhorred being ‘trendy’ for decades because it’s dependent on external judgement.

I’m looking at all the artists I love, seeing the (obvious) commonalities between them, and working on improving specific skills & techniques.
