Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolours vs Royal Talens Van Gogh - Which is the better budget/student-grade range? I found out this morning.
Van Gogh vs Winsor & Newton Cotman - Watercolour Paint Review I’ve swatched out my new Van Gogh paints and compared them with equivalent colours from the Winsor and Newton Cotman set that I already own. Van Gogh is made by Royal Talens, a Dutch brand. Winsor and Newton is a British brand but the Cotman colours are manufactured in China. Both of these ranges are “Student” quality, not professional. Both are available open stock as half pans or tubes, and both declare their pigments which is very helpful when choosing colours. One of the biggest complaints I’ve heard about Van Gogh is that many of the colours lack transparency. And of the Cotmans set, the biggest complaint is the lack of intensity in the colours. So, let’s see how this holds up in my test.
