Quanah has got to rank as one of the most fascinating figures in Texas history. The original photo is in the collection of the Oklahoma Historical Society.

Comanche Chief Ten Bears as photographed by Alexander Gardner, probably in 1871. Ten Bears was almost 80 years old here. Per his own account, he spent almost 50 years on the plains before ever encountering a white person. What a remarkable face!
