GOWERTON: Dramatic scenes as skip lorry loses control after hitting Railway bridge

A bridge that has been crashed into dozens of times over the years has been struck once again in Gowerton, temporarily closing the road from vehicle access.

Trafle Mill railway bridge, located on Victoria Road in Gowerton, which has a height limit of 3.3 metres, is a notorious accident blackspot, hit over 30 times in the past decade, often by tall lorries and buses.

As of 2026, it remains one of Wales’ most frequently struck bridges, causing significant traffic delays and rail safety checks. 

Despite existing signage and warnings, vehicles continue to hit the bridge. Network Rail has previously installed extra warning signs and laser sensors to alert drivers, but still accidents occur.

The most recent notable vehicle strike occurred in April 2023, when a van hit the bridge, requiring police assistance for traffic management. Other significant strikes in recent years include: 

• May 2022: An agricultural vehicle struck the bridge, leading to a temporary road closure for damage assessment.
• August 2020: A Swansea Council refuse collection vehicle (bin lorry) hit the bridge, causing significant tailbacks and disrupting local bus services.
• March 2020: A Kingsmill bread van had its roof sliced off while attempting to pass underneath.
• October 2019: A lorry’s roof was completely ripped off, which prompted rail service delays as a safety precaution. 

On this occasion, the road was closed in both directions on the B4296 and the A484 roundabout (near the old ‘the Wave’ studios) for some time, with South Wales Police present.

Thankfully, no one was hurt in the accident, with the Force confirming the road had reopened later in the evening.

Police appeal following E-bike rider death after collision with car on Llanelli road

A Llanelli road has been closed for 16 hours after a car collided with an E-bike on Llethri Road in Llanelli at around 8.50pm last night.

Emergency services were called to the scene where the e-bike rider was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road was closed for investigations to take place, and reopened at around 2pm on Sunday, May 4.

A Dyfed-Powys Police spokesperson confirmed that the next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers. They said:

“Officers are urgently seeking to speak with riders of two other e-bikes, who were reported to be in the area at the time of the collision,” the spokesperson said.

“Both riders were believed to be wearing face coverings and one wearing a yellow jacket.”

Port Eynon collision sees Air Ambulance rescue to free person trapped inside car

Two fire crews attended the incident, together with the Welsh Ambulance Service, South Wales Police and the Wales Air Ambulance.

The casualty was trapped inside the vehicle after the collision and had to be cut out and airlifted to hospital.

A statement from Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said:

“At 11.57am on Friday, January 31, the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews from Swansea West and Gorseinon fire stations were called to an incident in Port Eynon in Swansea.

“Crews responded to a road traffic collision involving one private motor vehicle that had collided with a wall, with one casualty medically trapped inside the vehicle.

“Crews utilised road traffic collision cutting gear, stabilisation gears and small gear to release the casualty, who was then conveyed to hospital by air ambulance.

“This incident required a multi-agency response, with the Welsh Ambulance Services Trust, Wales Air Ambulance and South Wales Police also in attendance.”
