Here's hoping the good weather holds for Saturday when I'll be leading a couple of tours around Pevensey Castle https://englishheritage.seetickets.com/event/puzzling-over-pevensey-the-demolishing-of-1216/pevensey-castle-east-sussex/3357399 #archaeology #castleslighting #PevenseyCastle

With a busy start to the year, evenings and weekends have been important for downtime. That does mean less headspace to work on my book, until last weekend.

It felt great to get back into a rhythm and push ahead. #archaeology #castles #CastleSlighting

Seeing article proofs makes it somehow *real*. It's no longer an idea sitting in a Word document, it's on the brink of being shared. I'm so excited my article on Pevensey is nearing the finishing line. #PevenseyCastle #CastleSlighting #SussexArchaeologicalCollections #MedievalArchaeology #castles
Tomorrow I'll be giving a talk to the Centre for Medieval Research. I've been working on turning my PhD into a book, and this is part of that process. I'm excited to be talking about castles again! #castleslighting #archaeology #medieval #castles
I don't know when it happened, but at some point Google translate got a lot better, which opens up a lot of literature. I don't think I had much luck with it back when I was doing my PhD - at the very least I remember there was a relatively low character limit to what it could handle in one go. https://richardthecastellan.wordpress.com/2023/07/01/another-exploration-with-google-translate-defensive-slighting-in-the-crusades/ #CastleSlighting
Another exploration with Google Translate: Defensive slighting in the Crusades

Spurred by recent success in using Google Translate to read a 2021 article on the slighting of castles belonging to the Teutonic Knights, I thought I’d have a go at another article I’ve been meanin…

The recent article on Pevensey Castle had more implications for working out whether it was slighted in 1216 that I first realised. It's handy to have time to read through articles in their entirety. https://richardthecastellan.wordpress.com/2023/01/29/another-piece-of-the-pevensey-puzzle/ #PevenseyCastle #CastleSlighting #SussexArchaeologicalCollections #MedievalArchaeology

Tonight I find myself thinking about Raglan Castle and the Parliamentarian efforts to demolish it in 1646. The undermining of two walls of the Great Tower was pretty effective. Leaving the ruined shell looks like a statement. Photo by Niki.L, licensed CC-BY-SA 4.0 https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Raglan_Castle_Sept18.jpg #castles #Wales #CastleSlighting

Naturally I skipped to the bit which discussed the events of 1216 when John ordered the castle's destruction. In short it says it's not clear cut whether the orders were followed.

That's absolutely right, and I explore the subject in detail in a paper I've submitted to the Sussex Archaeological Collections. Hopefully it will appear in the next volume as that would be a neat bridge from this one. #PevenseyCastle #CastleSlighting #SussexArchaeologicalCollections #Sussex #archaeology #castles

Lila Rakoczy's PhD thesis is the definitive work on castles 🏰 destroyed or damaged as a result of the British Civil War in the 17th century. I was just able to add to Wikipedia more detail to the description of the possible slighting of Clitheroe Castle in Lancashire. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clitheroe_Castle#15th_to_17th_century

@gorfram slighting was deliberately damaging a high status structure. My research looks at how this applies to castles. It covers a range of different activities. Quite a few castle ruins in the UK are in that condition because they were slighted at one point.
