I’m reading Careless People and holy shit! No wonder Zuck wanted to suppress it. I’d read one other book about Facebook and it was about how awful they were, but this is by an insider and it’s so much worse. Anyway, it’s worth reading.

Just finished reading #CarelessPeople

As a kiwi it was great to read about Sarah trying her best to push things forward in the right direction at Facebook. It’s so bizarre to see so much criticism of her and calling out her complicity. I understand some of it but like, she was trying her best and she’s still blowing the whistle on what went on there. Not everyone that works at a bad company is a bad person, some people are genuinely trying to make things better.

As much as #Manitoba's Wab Kinew is the envy of the country, he is wrong on his desire for #socialMedia #surveillance of youth. And he is wrong to even suggest that it is possible. The real problem is the lack of regulation of #BigTech. https://www.michaelgeist.ca/2026/04/the-illusion-of-protection-why-canadas-growing-push-to-ban-social-media-for-kids-wont-work/

The Illusion of Protection: Why Canada’s Growing Push to Ban Social Media for Kids Won’t Work - Michael Geist

The momentum behind a social media ban for Canadian minors has been building for months. The federal Liberals voted at their April policy convention to back a minimum age of 16 for social media accounts and AI chatbots, the government’s expert panel on online safety is studying the issue, protesters have now rallied on Parliament Hill calling for it, and on Saturday night, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew told a Winnipeg fundraiser that his government will be the first in Canada to ban social media and AI chatbots for kids. Kinew did not specify which kids, when it would happen, or how it would be enforced, none of which appeared to matter to the audience. The political appeal of a ban is obvious, since concerns about social media’s effects on young users are widely shared. Yet the policy itself is a terrible idea that will not work. This post examines at least six reasons why an outright age-based ban, particularly one that extends to AI chatbots, is the wrong response to a serious issue.

Alkuteos Careless People nousi ilmestyttyään maaliskuussa 2025 The New York Timesin kirjalistan kärkeen Metan yritettyä vaikuttaa ensin sen julkaisuun ja sitten kirjoittajan medianäkyvyyteen sanktioin.

Wynn-Williams sai potkut vuonna 2017 syytettyään esimiestään Joel Kaplania seksuaalisesta ahdistelusta." Jne..

Arvio: Entinen Facebook-johtaja kuvaa sosiaalista mediaa sisäpiirin näkökulmasta

Sarah Wynn-Williamsin Edesvastuutonta väkeä on pysäyttävä selonteko Metan toiminnasta ja johdosta, Matti Komulainen kirjoittaa.

Meta stole Sarah Wynn-Williams’s voice. It couldn’t stop her exposé

The author was gagged by the firm after her book, Careless People, alleged sex harassment and censorship. Its actions prove her point, says her publisher

The Sunday Times
I'm reading #CarelessPeople at the moment. This passage is a meeting with Sheryl Sandberg after she had suggested that Facebook not just promote organ donation but become a platform where people upload their medical data and sign their organs away. The author was trying to explain that choosing to go in that direction was filled with risks and problems.

> Sensing danger, I pivot to the risk of organ trafficking. I explain that countries have put a lot of thought into safeguarding organ donation information and guarding against cross-border transportation of organs. She turns to me, indignant. The edge in her voice is unmistakable. “Do you mean to tell me that if my four-year-old was dying and the only thing that would save her was a new kidney, that I couldn’t fly to Mexico and get one and put it in my handbag?” I look around the meeting room for support, not sure whether she is clueless or confused. Usually she’s so savvy. But it strikes me she’s serious and she’s someone who’s used to getting what she wants. Everyone in the room avoids eye contact with both of us, even Marne and Debbie, my usual protectors. I realize that in delivering bad news, I’m the prey that’s been separated from the herd. “Ah, that’s right,” I say, with as much solicitousness as I can muster. “Countries generally have strict regulations in place to prevent black-market sales or theft or illegal harvesting of organs or body parts more generally. It’s usually something determined by government policy rather than who can pay the most.” Sheryl glowers at me. I can feel her estimation of me drop as her indignation rises. There’s a long, tense moment of silence.

After reading this passage last night I almost shook my wife awake to read it aloud (I didn't, I let her sleep)
Umm, why did no one warn me about the opening chapter of Careless People?

For the benefit of anyone with a history of being gaslit (mine comes from autism), the first chapter begins with a firsthand account of a girl surviving a shark attack, with the severity of the medical issues arising from the next 24 hours being downplayed until the medical intervention necessary is indistinguishable from body horror.

Needless to say, reading this is not a desirable way to start a shift at work.

(Also, JESUS CHRIST!!! Glad Wynn-Williams made it out alive.)

@JEmphatically Truly can't make this stuff up! "Multiple communities in the region are struggling with #drought and #water supply issues. Greenview itself declared an agricultural disaster due to drought this past summer, and that same day, its council approved adding more land to the purchase agreement being negotiated with O’Leary."
