Vancouver Island communities call for compensation after Highway 4 shutdown

With Highway 4 reopened, Vancouver Island communities' attention has shifted to compensation from the closure and plans for an alternate route to prevent future shutdowns.

Highway 4 near Cameron Bluffs will be closed on Aug. 17 and Aug. 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. The highway connects Port Alberni, Tofino and Ucluelet to the rest of Vancouver Island.

Highway 4 was closed on June 6 due to the Cameron Bluffs wildfire, isolating the communities of Port Alberni, Ucluelet and Tofino.

Highway 4 on Vancouver Island remains closed as Cameron Bluffs wildfire burns

According to the BC Wildfire Service, crews are making reasonable progress on the fire burning along Highway 4 near Port Alberni. The highway remains closed for the time being.
