I always wonder, do the people in power not appreciate their own communications being secure against surveillance? Or do they think they're somehow going to get the secret not-backfires option?
Every few years, if they haven’t already succeeded, a gov’t will try to pass some dumb over enthusiastic surveillance bill that breaks encryption… right now that is happening with #c22 in #canada.
It’s dumb, it’s dangerous, unnecessary, and erodes what little privacy the average citizen has left after 25 years of creeping toward the police state being the norm in western democracies.
We can’t let this happen. Putting a back door into every single communication channel that can possibly exist doesn’t make us safer… it makes us all more vulnerable to manipulation by people with bad intentions.

I would like to point out - these are the people who will be empowered by #BillC22 to spy on #Canadians without checks:
"**Three #Canadian #police arrested for sexual assault in a cab in Barcelona** Two of the arrested were tourists to the city, are being investigated for sexual assault and injury."
They picked up a prostitute, started to sexually assault her, hit her in the face causing injuries requiring stitches. One tried to flee the country.
@avilewis I know you're already well aware of the effects Canadians have been subjected to with unwarranted data collection.
#C22 seems to make it no longer a choice to respect Canadians privacy. With now multiple companies threatening to leave Canada I'd love to see the #NDP
speak out against this and ensure our safety and prosperity at the same time.
Will the #NDP be releasing any statements on C22 before it's too late?
