Peak Health Bodies Take Long-Consult Funding Fight to Parliament
YES! Bulk-billing hits 81.4% nationwide – biggest quarterly jump in 20+ years thanks to Labor's $multi-billion Medicare boost. More than 3,400 fully bulk-billing clinics now, biggest gains in regional & working-class areas. This is what fighting for universal healthcare looks like! Keep the pressure on – push toward 90%+ by 2030 and deeper fixes for chronic care equity. No one skips the doc because of cost. More of this, please!

New data shows the share of GPs offering bulk billing has started to recover. This is a welcome relief for Australians doing it tough.
But let's be clear: this is a repair job. The previous LNP government deliberately and almost completely destroyed bulk billing through years of funding freezes and neglect. They drove clinics to the brink, forcing millions to pay upfront for the first time.
The current government is slowly turning that around, but there's a long way to go to restore universal, affordable access to a GP.

Technically, bulk billing GPs do still exist. In my urban area there are three (30mins away) but they don't accept new patients. They're choccas. Everything else around me is about $100 for a quick consultation, minus whatever rebate Medicare offers.
Pretty significant disincentive to just see a doctor in case something is not quite right. Makes you stop and ask yourself, do I really need to see the doctor? Can I Google this instead?
So much of modern medicine is built around early detection to maximise outcomes. Decades of eroding Medicare in Australia now ensures that the first line of contact with medical assistance is a barrier.
Labor's great election promise is that by the completion of the bulk-billing payment increases in ~2030, #BulkBilling GPs will receive less revenue per patient than they do right now billing privately with a medicare rebate & gap.
That's *before* taking inflation into account.
That's supposed to *increase* bulk billing rates.
