Those are the same book blocks.
Exactly the same paper, same number of signatures (folded papers), same binding techniques.

Only difference is the cover. The red on the left is double paper glued together. The blue book on the right is a hardcover with cardboard laminated with paste paper.

They behave so differently.
Because I did the red one first and the book block spread so wide I made the cardboard spine of the blue book a little wider. Turns out, way too wide.
Another lesson learned.

Last week I made paste paper for bookbinding.

Developed in Germany in the early 17th century, it's been used for book covers or endpapers ever since.

This is so much fun, I could do this all day long, if I had enough floor space for the paper to dry 😅
