The blue LED was almost impossible to make

@vfrmedia Yeah, I remember when those still had yellow displays because the original idea was to use yellow as hint (i.e. indicators, fuel low) and red for critical things (low oil, low battery voltage)...

Also it took till the late 2010s for #BlueLEDs to become very cheap.

  • I remember in the 2000s they were 3x the price of green, 4x the price of yellow and 5x the price of red LEDs if not more...

Took a bunch of jiggling and jostling, but my new cable modem is in, provisioned, and a speedtest shows double the bandwidth of the old modem. Also, it is BLUE.

BLLLLUUUUUUUEEEEEEEE.

Because I have some background in electrical and electronics engineering back in college, I was already somewhat familiar with Nakamura’s work in inventing the blue LED. But this Veritasium video is really excellent in explaining how wonderful this invention was. Plus, the animations are so good that I wish we had these back when we were learning how semiconductors and diodes work.

This eye mask story has been getting a lot of play this week, and the β€œyou’re doing sleep wrong” vibe is annoying. In addition to the big stuff, how about hunting down all of the blue LEDs and status indicators and turning them off? Are they dimmable? Can their light be diffused? Painted over? Covered?

Research has shown that even relatively dim light when we snooze β€” about the equivalent of a hallway light β€” can have surprisingly profound physiological effects.

Impressive lecture about light, near infrared (NIR) to be precise. The need to get outside, to get NIR (so it can penetrate the skin) and its health benefits for all animals, including humans. About the shortage that many are experiencing nowadays, since the use of white LED lights. And the disadvantages of blue light.

Some interesting studies are discussed.
