Now, Hear This! by Bill Barron, Ted Curson & Orchestra, released on Audio Fidelity in 1964.
One of the most fantastic modernist jazz records of the 60's! The team of Bill Barron and Ted Curson never gets the mention that it should in histories of jazz, but the two of them were an amazing team that pushed the boundaries of modern jazz, while still managing to stay in a deeply swinging groove. Curson's horn is tight, sharp, and exquisitely pitched on the session -- and Barron's tenor wails in a way that hardly shows up on some of his later albums. The group on here is a quintet, with Kenny Barron on piano, Ronnie Boykins on bass, and Dick Berk on drums. Tracks include "Dwackdi Mun Fualik", "In A Monastery Garden", "Jes Swingin", "Hurdy Gurdy", and "The Leopard". - Dusty Groove
