I am submitting a brief to the Senate committee studying Bill S-5, Canada's health data interoperability bill. I support the bill but it doesn't go far enough.

The bill mandates that vendors build systems capable of sharing data. It doesn't address the privacy laws that prevent custodians from actually using that capability. And it does nothing for patient access to their own records.

#BillS5 was to #modernize #Canadian #EnvironmentalProtectionAct - the right of all people in #Canada to a #HealthyEnvironment is now recognized in law. Although ultimate goal was to have this right enshrined in the #CanadianCharterOfRightsAndFreedoms - getting it into this #law is a great start.

The Environmental Protection Act hadn’t been #updated since 1999.
