And a lot of musicians nowadays don’t understand that. Just look at Justin Bieber and Coachella – people paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to watch him… scroll Youtube. Wow. Exciting.
Fortunately, Gelli Haha and Big Sis aren’t Justin Bieber or Coachella and fully understand that people are paying good money to see them. Like, really good money – the economy is shit. So it was a very welcoming sight to see, say, Big Sis stripping down to their underwear throughout their set. Or see Gelli Haha create an entire storyline throughout hers, complete with things like:
Dancers in the crowd searching for Gelli Haha.
Inflatable balloons for people to hit.
Props and props and props galore.
Like, when you buy a ticket instead of groceries, you want to do more than just listen to music. You want to be involved, even if that means standing in the back watching strangers hit balloons while other strangers sing music. Or standing in the back watching club rappers go from incredibly oversized shirts to their pants, because that’s what British people call underwear.
That’s fun. That’s cool. And if the venue didn’t slope down in the back making it incredibly hard to see for those of us who need space, and if I was a fan of queer club music (sexual lyrics with heavy synth, typically with slower tempos, and an emphasis on vibey space), this would be a must see because of how interactive an event it was.
But it was hard to see at this venue. And I like faster music with more aggression. So it’d be dishonest to say you must see them. Although, if you’re a fan of that music and really tall, you probably would have a killer time using your money on Gelli Haha and Big Sis instead of groceries.
