Hence the capitalist Market™ is "free", but "there's no free ride" and "freedom isn't free" and so forth. To give things away without expectation of return is the very essence of the virtue of generosity, which was once reckoned among the #Christian virtues but which modern Christianity tends to regard as sinful and encouraging moral laxity and laziness. There's no shortage of Biblical passages that can be construed as evidence that it's morally necessary to hoard money and be stingy with it. All the doctrines of capitalism have some corresponding body of Biblical rationale propping it up somewhere. Capitalism and Christianity are old dancing partners.

And if generosity is evil, then far worse is the sin of expecting generosity, much less demanding it. Thus #begging is now one of the foulest crimes in capitalist society, especially in the United States which is largely dominated by the false idea that anyone ought to be able to get rich if they really want to. A vast population exists of people who feel morally entitled to punish beggars, most usually by accusing them of specious crimes and directly criminalizing both begging and giving things to beggars. The war crimes of #Israel and other international crimes have given rise to a great many desperate refugees and survivors trying to subsist if necessary through begging; they are constantly harried by great clouds of pestiferous self-appointed police on the #Fediverse and U.S. society generally, people who feel like they're doing the Cosmos a noble service by reporting every #begpost to the authorities.

There's too many cops in the world. But I myself know the temptation of playing the role.
