European (#ESA) #Mars probe #Beagle2 stopped responding on #ThisDayInHistory in 2003, just prior to its landing. An #exobiology mission, it was cleverly named for the ship that took #CharlesDarwin on his long scientific exploration. This Beagle, alas, touched down too forcefully.

Let me make that clearer:

We all know that #Europe has not managed so far to land a craft on Mars. By now we all know that #ESA's #Beagle2 failed to operate on Mars. But who knows that it was EADS/Astrium, now -surprise!- Airbus, who managed the program?

I don't mean to diminish the importance of aerospace & arms companies of European interests, but ESA shouldn't appear as an advertising agency for the private sector.

Oligarchies don't suddenly come out of nowhere. Take the #US as an example.

Beagle 2 Mars mission leader remembered on launch anniversary

The Beagle 2 Lander was transported to Mars on 2 June 2003 with Colin Pillinger leading the mission.

20 years ago this minute, ESA's Mars Express mission launched on a Soyuz from Baikonur. On the top deck was #Beagle2, the UK's and Europe's first Mars lander mission. I am proud to have worked on beagle2, and operated it all the way to its landing, even though that was only confirmed many years later. In onboard memory are environmental data and images of the landing site autonomously gathered during deployment. Data we'll never get.
