#Bosnia-#Herzegovina in the #Balkans has so many ethnic groups and divisions, #EU is asking it to speak "with one voice" as a precondition to #EUMembership.
#MiddleEast & #Ukraine aren't the only #tinderbox. Ethnic and political divisions in Bosnia-Herzegovina persist after the #genocide of over 100,000 people in the 1992-1995 #BalkanWar.
Bosnia’s #Serbs openly want to secede from Bosnia. #US and #Britain have slapped them with sanctions for harboring those ambitions.
The European Commission chief urged Bosnia to “with one voice” if it wants to move forward in an effort to join the European Union after gaining candidate status last year. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrapped up her tour of Western Balkan EU hopefuls in Bosnia’s capital of Sarajevo on Wednesday. As the war rages in Ukraine, EU officials have sought to push the process forward and encourage Balkan nations to boost reforms. Von der Leyen discussed details of the 6 billion-euro ($6.37 billion) package for Western Balkan countries during her trip. The six countries are at different stages on their path to join the EU, a process expected to take years.
I sat watching the Gulf War on tv while pregnant. I was terrified for that child's future because I didn't know where it was all going. There was video of Israelis inside their shelters, during black-outs as Iraqi missiles rained down. The horror of Desert Storm, the civilians in the bunker. The bleakness of the destruction of priceless ancient relics in the museum of Baghdad. The absolute environmental armageddon of the ignition of the Kuwait oil wells then the wins as one by one, the international teams of firefighters put the fires out.
I remember photos of the beauty of Sarajevo years ago, and after the siege, the unrecognizable rubble that was left. Reading the stories of the Balkan war sounds so much like what Ukraine is going through right now.
I sit watching all these current wars live on the internet and I am even more terrified for my grandchildren's futures.
This planet has been a battleground since the beginning of time. But now, for the first time there is another battle added in that is the most terrifying of all. If we refuse to come together as a single species on this planet, the planet will get rid of us. We are resilient and resourceful but far too many humans are greedy war mongers and complacent about the changes in climate that are rapidly wreaking havoc with our human needs to survive.
I suppose war will always be with us, as it seems to be human nature. But I also know that it is human nature to love others more than ourselves. This is the hope I hold onto.. that there are more humans that love each other than those that love war.
