The screen was still displaying all happily (I HATE I didn't get a pic of it), while the smoke was billowing so I'm thinking something blew in the power supply. As it goes. :)
I YOLOed this morning and turned on the 512k without cracking it.
It chimed!
...and then started billowing smoke after about 10mintes. π
A faulty electrolytic capacitor which probably had about 15 hours use before failing and causing distorted audio (it was used as a DC blocking cap on an audio output). Mockingly, it was "Forever" branded.
It, and its friend, desoldered and replaced with new Panasonic caps.

My first ever motherboard recapping operation is a success. It was an Asus K8U-X that I got in a box full of old computer parts.
The motherboard came with an AMD Sempron 2600+ CPU along with its fans and cooler, one stick of 512MB of DDR1 RAM, and a bunch of bulging KZG capacitors that prevented the board to start.
Hot air, preheating, paste flux and cranking up the temperature of the iron were key to this. On the other hand, the desoldering gun wasn't of much help.
