Un esemplare di vespa, raccolto nei primi anni ’80 nella provincia di Valdivia in Cile, è rimasto chiuso in un cassetto disordinato del Museo di Storia Naturale di Londra per oltre 40 anni. Recenti indagini hanno rivelato che non si tratta solo di una specie nuova per la scienza, ma rappresenta anche un nuovo genere.
La vespa, lunga solo 3,5 millimetri, appartiene alla famiglia degli ichneumonidi, comunemente noti come le vespe di Darwin. Questi insetti sono parassitoidi e depongono le loro uova all’interno delle larve, pupe o uova di altri arthropodi, uccidendo l’ospite mentre la giovane vespa si sviluppa.

A New Discovery in the Insect Kingdom
A wasp specimen, collected in the early 1980s in the Valdivia province of Chile, had been stored in a disorganized drawer of the Natural History Museum in London for over 40 years. Recent investigations have revealed that it is not only a new species for science, but also represents a new genus.
The wasp, only 3.5 millimeters long, belongs to the family of ichneumonids, commonly known as Darwin's wasps. These insects are parasitoids and lay their eggs inside the larvae, pupae, or eggs of other arthropods, killing the host while the young wasp develops.
