"The script for romance has been changing ... and it will continue to change along with our sense of what is “normal.” How that process happens has a lot to do with representation in the stories we tell, and in the stories we consume ... "
My new essay for the Insitute of Art and Ideas is out now!
Romantic love is still put on a pedestal as the exemplar of relationships. This is damaging not only to individuals but to society at large. It discriminates against people who find deep love in non-traditional relationships, it weakens our sense of connection to those beyond our romantic partners. What we need is more and different stories about what love might look like, argues Carrie Jenkins.
"The sort of re-naming that is undertaken by members of subordinated groups may cause their poetry to seem gratuitously alien to readers steeped in the canon of the dominating group. But it is easy to see that this may be an ethical and political failing on the part of the audience, rather than a good reason to condemn the poetry."
I'm starting my #Phil490 course by pairing this paper with the first letter of Paisley Rekdal's Appropriate and I'm VERY EXCITED!
"The romantic 'happy ever after' myth "is unrealistic, but in the same way that beauty standards are: we are all meant to fall short to some degree, and then feel bad about it, and then to go out and buy something to feel (temporarily) better.
My work isn’t aimed at showing the myth is unrealistic – we know that already. It’s aimed at unmasking the myth as a bad ideal to aim at in the first place."

For my Metaphysics of Love and Gender seminar this term I offered students an opportunity to write a philosophical op ed instead of an essay, and I'm SO EXCITED about what's being submitted right now I can't even.
We took inspiration and examples from the past winners list here:

This has become a really valuable pedagogical resource for public-facing philosophy.
